Vehicle Exhaust System Parts
Your BMW 502 exhaust system runs from the exhaust manifold (or header) flange connected to the engine, all the way to the exhaust tip at the rear. In between you will usually find a flex pipe, catalytic converter or two, a mid pipe, a resonator, a muffler, and several feet of carefully routed exhaust pipe tube. All of these components have a very tough job, and that is to move extremely hot waste gases safely away from the engine and the passenger compartment. Special high temperature resistant gasket material create leak-free connections, but over time they can develop leaks due to vibration or rust. Depending on your vehicle, the system may be welded together, or it may use an exhaust clamp at each connection. Your local NAPA has both direct fit stock replacement exhaust and aftermarket exhaust components from companies like Bosal, MagnaFlow, and DynoMax.
The exhaust system on your BMW 502 also plays a part in emissions control. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) helps reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) while the catalytic converter scrubs harmful pollutants from the exhaust. A clogged or internally damaged catalytic converter can also affect performance. Usually the exhaust does its job quietly, but an aftermarket exhaust can give your ride a sporty sound (some even retain CARB-legal status). You can also add a personal touch with a custom exhaust tip. However you choose to maintain your exhaust system, your local NAPA Auto Parts store has all your exhaust system needs.
