If your vehicle alignment is not within specifications, you can put it back into spec with the right tools and parts. A few turns of a steering tie rod sleeve can change the toe while loosening up and adjusting struts can adjust camber. Sometimes suspension components like ball joints or control arms need replaced to put things back right. In some situations, special hardware is needed to make up for large amounts of misalignment. There are many ways for wheel alignment to fall out of specification, as well as signs that your wheel alignment is off, but the solution is a good alignment machine and a selection of automotive alignment tools.
Having the right wheel alignment tools on hand is also important. Most shops that perform alignments have a drive-on alignment lift along with their choice of alignment machines. But there are a few other automotive alignment tools that help make the job easier, such as a steering wheel holder to keep steering linkage from moving and a turnplate (or turntable set) to let wheels turn. It is also a good idea to have the right calibration tools for your auto alignment machine. Equipping a shop with a quality wheel alignment tool kit is a big investment, but one which can pay off in the long run with satisfied customers.
If your local NAPA Auto Care offers wheel alignment service, they will have a wheel alignment machine. Wheel alignment machines are highly specialized components that use a combination of reflectors and sensors to read the position of the wheels. Reflectors are attached to the wheels and pointed toward sensors on the alignment machine. Based on your vehicle year, make and model, the car alignment machine uses a stored database of specifications to analyze the alignment of the wheels.
As modern vehicles get more high-tech, so do vehicle alignment tools. Some alignment machines even allow for working on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The vehicle wheels need properly aligned so the onboard ADAS computers can adequately react, and it is all part of the entire vehicle technology ecosystem. You can accessorize many wheel alignment system setups with components that allow for calibrating a host of vehicle systems beyond just steering angle. Adding on a wheel alignment calibration frame or camera mount can help customize your alignment equipment to your shop's needs.
