The knock sensor detects if the explosion of the mixture inside the cylinders occurs in an incorrect manner (detonation or pinging), thus transmitting a signal to the electronic control unit of the engine. Detonation can be caused by excessive pressure/temperature or the use of a fuel with an inappropriate octane rating. The ECU determines the engine cylinder where the detonation occurred, through the signals emitted by the knock sensor, and it reacts by reducing the pressure in the cylinder or reducing speed and combustion temperature using a variation of the mixture enrichment.
