What Are The Hand Tools Needed To Paint A Car?

Many of the hand tools for painting a car are actually professional automotive tools for body repair. Your body shop or paint shop should be well stocked with hammers, a maul, pry bars, a hook and pick tool set and a windshield remove blade. Also, purchase a manual caulking gun with up to 400 pounds of pushing force that can also be used to dispense adhesives. Additional car paint tools you will need include sanding blocks, abrasive disc adapters, a cut-off wheel, a body filler file, paint nib files and a suction cup dent puller.

Paintless dent repair is the quickest solution for hail damage. This skilled process uses car paint hand tools like picks and bumping hammers to slowly work out dents and dings. The picks are long rods with different bends and tip shapes to get into the damaged area. Once the dent is out, it may be raised a bit. In this case, the shop tech uses a bumping hammer to lower the raised area. Dents not accessible with a pick are pulled with a suction cup tool. This works really well in areas where there is a lot of flex in the main panel.

One of the best car painting tools for body prep is plastic body filler, often referred to by the brand name Bondo (made by 3M). Plastic body fillers are intended for small dings, not a major repair. Bondo was never intended to cover over rust or fill large dents and body damage. Note, you cannot apply plastic body filler to a smooth painted surface. The paint should be sanded off to the bare metal first. You must also remove any rust scale from the metal, or the rust will grow under the filler compound. Add a backup screen to cover any holes, then use Bondo body filler for a strong repair.

Before starting a typical automotive paint job, any scratches are lightly sanded out using 1,500 to 3,000 grit sanding blocks. Then the area is buffed with a small buffing wheel to bring back the shine. Usually when you sand a surface, it needs to be dry. But wet sanding relies on a lubricant, like water, between the sandpaper and your vehicle's surface to get a smooth finish.

Wet sanding can be used when your vehicle has a dull finish. It helps remove tiny scratches and imperfections in the clear coat. You can also use the wet sand approach to ensure a surface is smooth before applying paint. Circles are fine when you're applying wax to a car, but not when you're sanding. Instead, you'll want to work in a back-and-forth motion, sanding in a straight line to get the best look possible.
