Bearings are some of the most common metal parts in the world. Simply put, these rolling elements reduce friction between two moving parts. In ball bearings, the rolling elements are small metal spheres, whereas roller and spindle bearings use rollers. From your hood to your trunk, there are dozens of bearings that your car uses in a variety of ways. Depending on your year, make and model, your vehicle uses fuel pump bearings, alternator bearings and even bearings in the air conditioning system. Because a bearing can only function properly in a dust-free environment, dust caps and wheel seals should also be replaced and maintained.
Most DIYers are familiar with the wheel bearings, but your 2002 Ford Explorer's driveshaft also uses these hardworking components. Because the axle of your vehicle is yet another rotating part, it too requires a bearing to prevent friction. Likewise, the center support bearing or driveshaft bearing connects the two sections of your driveshaft. If you've noticed a squealing or whining that gets quieter as you go faster, the issue could be a worn driveshaft bearing.
Some of the most crucial bearings your 2005 Honda Civic uses are those found in your steering system, specifically the wheels. Maintenance on your wheels usually starts with the wheel bearing and/or hubs. Located within the center of the hub, these bearings act to reduce friction, and are visible when the wheels are removed. These two components usually come preassembled in a single unit, sometimes known as a wheel hub assembly or WHA. It fits between your brakes and the axle, allowing your wheels to spin smoothly. If you've noticed noises like popping or knocking while turning corners, or if your steering wheel pulls to one side when you brake, it may be time to consider a wheel bearing replacement.
If you choose to replace or clean the bearings, get ready to get down and dirty with a little NAPA Know How! Because most jobs require extra grease, be sure to stock up. It's a good idea to seal grease containers tightly to prevent dust from contaminating it. We also offer other bearing safeguards, like wheel seals and bearing dust caps, which help to maintain good lubrication and shield your bearings against dirt and debris.
